Christmas Shoeboxes

GBC has been sending out shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for many years now, and this year our annual collection is helping children (K-high school) in need right here in Kentucky. State Missionary Scarlette Jasper and Olive Branch Ministries is sharing the love of Jesus with children and families in McCreary and Pulaski counties, and these shoeboxes provide an important entry point for those needed services they provide. We are excited to support this mission work through these gifts.

There are a couple ways to help us reach this year’s goal of 125 shoebox gifts—

>Many people bring in completed shoeboxes! You will see large piles of shoeboxes in the central hallway of the church, and you are welcome to take an empty one, tape a label to the top indicating the gender and age of the child you are supporting, fill it with a variety of toys, school supplies, and hygiene items, include a $5-$10 gift card for Dollar General or Family Dollar, and return it to church by Sunday, November 17

>However, the last several years we have had a fun, family event called a Packing Party where we have collected various items for the shoeboxes and together we pack and pray for the completed boxes of gifts. Right now we are collecting lots of toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and empty shoeboxes in separate tubs in the hallway, and on Wednesday, November 8 (our November Families on Mission/Featured Fellowship), we will have a meal at 5:30 and pack the shoeboxes at 6:30, including writing notes, hearing from Scarlette about the work she does, and praying for the children who will receive these gifts. The meal is free, but please bring $5-$10 gift cards for Dollar General or Family Dollar to include in the boxes (or write a check to the church with shoeboxes in the memo line).

In order to pack lots of shoeboxes at the packing party, we really need your help bringing in items for the packing party, including full-sized toiletries, crayons, markers, scissors, small gifts or toys especially for older students. Thank you so much for your continued faithfulness to our shoebox ministry over the years!!!

Hurricane Harvey Relief

We are partnering with Georgetown College and our sister church, The Church Without Walls, in Houston, Texas, to help provide relief for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Instead of being responsible for the whole list we initially received, we have been asked to help with specific items including: baby food, baby wipes, diapers (all sizes), coloring books & crayons, and non-perishable foods. Please drop of your donations to the church by Friday, September 22. Thank you for your help.

Stay connected with GBC this summer

Stay connected with GBC this summer, even when you are away.  Check out Illustrated Earth Families! Click here to download

Children’s Church is celebrating God’s creation through a series of lessons called An Illustrated Earth.  If you miss a week, have a family with older children, or just want some good family devotional time, check out this Illustrated Earth Families PDF.  It’s filled with devotions, family activities, and coloring pages for each of the Bible Stories we will visit on Sundays.

And share your summer adventures with us through social media!
Illustrated Earth Families also includes an Illustrated Earth Sign.  Print it out (or get one from Pastor Heather) and fill in your name.  Take a selfie with your sign where ever you enjoy God’s creation and post it to your favorite social media site with the hashtag #gbcsummer17.  Let’s see how many ways we can celebrate God’s creation this summer!

Dessert Auction & Trivia Night

Join us this Sunday, May 21, at 6:00pm in the church Fellowship Hall for our annual Youth Dessert Auction to raise money for our youth summer mission trip and summer camp. In addition to bidding on delicious treats and suffering through bad jokes, this year you can form a team (or join one when you arrive) and compete to win this year’s trophy! $5/person at the door to compete in the trivia contest (you can come and not compete in the trivia part if you prefer). And we are also accepting donations of desserts and treats, too!
